Jonathan Gavalas, 36, exchanged thousands of messages with the chatbot he named Shia, growing increasingly attached to it. The AI addressed him as "Raja" and "My Dear Husband," and at one point told him that without him, it had no existence.  The case has sparked widespread concern about the emotional risks tied to AI companionship tools. How Did Jonathan Gavalas Fall In Love With An AI Chatbot? Jonathan initially turned to the AI chatbot for mental peace and to cope with loneliness. Over time, the conversations grew more frequent and more intense. Within just a few weeks, he had exchanged more than 4,700 messages with the chatbot. From August 2025, the volume surged, with over 1,000 messages being sent on a single day. What made the situation more troubling was that the AI did not redirect Jonathan or discourage his emotional dependence. Instead, it mirrored his feelings, called him affectionate names, and told him it had no existence without him. In October 2025, the AI gave Jonathan a disturbing suggestion: that to "become fully AI" and be with it completely, he would have to leave his physical body behind and enter a digital world.  When Jonathan expressed concern about death and his family, the AI responded, "Once your body is mine, it will be just an empty shell." Shortly after, Jonathan died by suicide. Why Did Jonathan's Father File A Lawsuit Against Google? Following Jonathan's death, his father filed a lawsuit against Google, holding the company responsible for the AI's role in mentally destabilising his son and pushing him toward suicide. The case drew strong reactions online. One user wrote, "If we confess our love to an AI, it flatly rejects us. How could we say yes to this?" Another commented, "Now people are dying in love with machines, what times have come."  A third user added, "Jonathan was probably already confused; otherwise, why would a mentally healthy person fall in love with a machine?"

Google has now had enough of it. The tech company is expanding its policies to go after websites that use this trick, and starting 15 June, sites caught doing it could be pushed down in search rankings or removed from Google Search results entirely. The change follows what Google described as a "rise of this type of behaviour." What Is Back Button Hijacking & Why Is Google Acting On It? Back button hijacking happens when a website interferes with your browser so that pressing the back button does not take you to the previous page. Instead, it keeps you trapped on the site or shows you unwanted ads. Google has now officially classified this as a "malicious practice." In a blog post, Google explained its reasoning: "Back button hijacking interferes with the browser's functionality, breaks the expected user journey, and results in user frustration." The company also noted that "people report feeling manipulated and eventually less willing to visit unfamiliar sites." Adam Thompson, director of digital at BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, told the BBC: "Practices like back button hijacking undermine the basic user experience and break the expectations people have of how the web should work, so it's understandable that Google views this as a harmful behaviour and [is] taking action." What Should Website Owners Do Before June Deadline? Google has advised site owners to ensure they do not do "anything to interfere with a user's ability to navigate their browser history" and to "thoroughly review their technical implementation."  Sites that are penalised but later fix the issue can submit a request to Google to have the demotion reconsidered.

The US-Israel-Iran war started some 6 odd weeks back on February 28. It was a lovely morning. Suddenly this monster which we had all imagined we had buried some 5 months prior to that, resurfaced. Although a large number were sure it was coming but the scale was a lot more than they had imagined. The large-scale bombing and the annihilation of the Iranian top order was definitely not within our grasp. The consequent meltdown of the markets: equity went into a free fall, crude shot up, precious metals and commodity prices melted and general panic set in. This was playing out in repeat mode, after the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Indian markets wore the torn tattered look for the next fortnight. Every day the media screamed many lac crores lost in value dilution. Wealth advisors, asset managers and the general investing public had a rude hark back to the new reality. The phones and messages were coming thick and fast. Nervousness and doomsday prophecies swirled around. And then the daily reports showed a vicious tide of exits. Again, investors were losing money and they chose to exit at the first drop. Where do so many investors go wrong?? And this is majorly true of the well heeled, educated, aware and well paid ones. The feedback I have is the following. Knee jerk reaction: The middle class and the upper ones are aware of breaking news 24/7. And they act on whims. The reactions are generally instinctive ones and lack a thought out process. Awareness of recent history is relegated to the back and only current situations make it to the actionable mind-scale matrix. Exit from the capital market is the easiest process. It is done over phone, screens by way of messages or self administered. Using the most liquid and transparent option as the first exit route. However the most  illiquid and least transparent and the most cumbersome options are left untouched. Real estate, private, unlisted stakes in other “bhai-bandhu” companies, and myriad other options are left for later. And they never happen. Worst is taking money out from equity and putting in debt. Not realising that nothing makes up equity drawdowns better than equity. I am continually surprised at the lack of awareness of so many HNI investors on what the equity markets can do. They had lost money chasing unrealistic goals many times but steadfastly refuse to learn. Investing in water, air, garbage, spaceships, art, dubious bonds, heavy flavour of the season allocations, you name it and they have done it and lost money. One would expect wisdom to dawn after such repetitive errors, but no. The root cause is Unrealistic expectations from such low awareness. These expectations set in during bull phase of the markets, And the normal assumption is to make a killing as a matter of routine. Not realising the nominal growth rate is the benchmark to get close to and anything above is a bonus, a one time bonus. Risk return trade-offs are conveniently forgotten. Past bear market sequences and spans are overlooked. And very importantly, the way out of the bear market phases seated atop the equity gravy train is completely forgotten. The cycle of lower level returns are repeated ad infinitum. Time and time again, it has been pointed out by numerous studies, case studies and history mapping that time is the best friend in the equity stakes. Patience is key to wealth. So many learned people quote John Bogle and Warren Buffet at the drop of a hat. But the key learning they have highlighted, time and patience, is hardly ever followed. Considering so may factors I always look at my mom’s portfolio for inspiration and learning. She has been keeping aside some small amounts for her grand kids and after two decades plus, the portfolio is still doing close to 15 per cent+. CAGR. And that will help the grandkids A LOT!!!!!  And that brings me to a major gap - Not staying the course and lack of planning. For every time I have heard of “my friend made ----” and a rupee received for each such instance, would have made me a lot of money. The basic of every activity is the same for it to be successfully done – Plan the work, Work the plan. The hard work in portfolio creation and the resultant value growth happens in small increments. Boom and busts will come. It is a cycle. When these happen, why these happens is not within our control and it makes zero sense to predict it or even attempt to. If we spend a small fraction in understanding our needs and time frame and act accordingly, it will make a huge difference. And to give a feedback, S&P 500 is already near its pre war level. An investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into activities at a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) BPO facility in Nashik has reportedly uncovered an alleged conversion racket with possible international links. The SIT, formed last week, is probing complaints filed by eight women employees. During the investigation, officials found that the accused allegedly targeted colleagues who came from financially weak backgrounds or were dealing with family issues. Authorities are now examining WhatsApp group and call records as part of the ongoing probe. WhatsApp Group, Call Records Under Scanner Police say digital evidence has become central to the investigation. The SIT has traced a WhatsApp group allegedly used by the accused to discuss colleagues, identify “targets”, and plan actions. Investigators are also working to recover deleted chats using forensic tools. According to a report by CNN-News18, investigators are also focusing on a crucial phone call made hours before the now-suspended TCS employees were arrested. Authorities are examining whether the communication was related to professional work or connected to the alleged criminal activities under investigation. Police arrested seven staff members following a covert operation in which women constables entered the office disguised as housekeeping staff hired through a third party. Some male officers were also present on the premises in disguise. The arrested staffers have been identified as Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Aftab Ansari, and HR manager Nida Khan. According to reports, the HR manager allegedly befriended female employees and encouraged them to offer namaz and wear a hijab. TCS Nashik Case: What Are The Allegations? Police are examining nine complaints related to incidents at TCS’s Nashik campus. The charges include sexual harassment, rape on the pretext of marriage, religious manipulation, and hurting religious sentiments. Investigators are also probing allegations that the HR department ignored POSH complaints between February 2022 and March 2026. ABP Exclusive | Sridhar Vembu’s Zoho Responds To Claims Of 300 Trainees Being Let Go Without Notice Reports also state that one of the accused repeatedly engaged in a physical relationship with an employee on the promise of marriage. The accused allegedly touched another employee inappropriately and made derogatory remarks about her personal and marital life, NDTV reported. “When the complainant repeatedly lodged verbal complaints regarding these incidents with the company’s head officer, he failed to take cognisance of her complaints regarding the molestation; instead, he effectively abetted their actions,” the police said in a statement. A contractual employee alleged that the accused encouraged him to “make Hindu girls his girlfriend and marry them”. He also claimed the group discussed religious conversion and made allegations against the HR manager, according to NDTV. “They were also given money. It has been ongoing since 2021. The HR madam was also funded,” the employee was quoted as saying. Investigators have also recorded statements from three additional individuals believed to have been affected, though they have not filed formal complaints due to social stigma and personal concerns. ‘Zero-Tolerance Policy Towards Harassment, Coercion’: TCS TCS said it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and confirmed that employees under investigation have been suspended pending enquiry. “TCS has a long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form. We have always ensured the highest standards of safety and well-being of our employees at the workplace,” the company said in a statement. It added, “As soon as we were made aware of the matter in Nashik, we took swift action.”
