All they need is evidence that talks will happen,” said Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum Equities. “They are willing to digest all of this overseas heartburn because AI is so real and the rate of change is so exponential that it's too egregious to be on the sidelines and not participate.” Key Indices: Nasdaq Outperforms, Dow Slips At 11:48 AM ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 189.47 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 48,346.52. The S&P 500 gained 30.48 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 6,997.86, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 246.98 points, or 1.05 per cent, to 23,886.07. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often referred to as Wall Street’s fear gauge, edged lower by 0.31 point to 18.06. Banking Stocks Rise On Strong Earnings Shares of Bank of America rose 1.9 per cent after the lender reported growth in first-quarter profit, while Morgan Stanley climbed 4.4 per cent on a jump in quarterly earnings. The S&P 500 financial index advanced 0.6 per cent. Tech Rally Continues; Quantum Stocks Surge The information technology index gained 1.5 per cent, supported by continued strength in software stocks. Quantum computing companies saw sharp gains, with Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum and Arqit Quantum rising 11.8 per cent, 15.9 per cent and 18.8 per cent, respectively. Momentum May Need Fresh Triggers Analysts cautioned that further gains may depend on concrete progress in geopolitical developments. “We're going to need more concrete evidence now that the folks that want to get together and talk about peace are able to accomplish something before the deadline of this ceasefire,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth. IMF Warning And Oil Prices Keep Risks Elevated The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday lowered its global growth outlook, citing war-driven energy price spikes, and warned that a prolonged conflict could push the world towards a recession. Oil prices edged higher on Wednesday and remain around 31 per cent above pre-war levels. Mixed Sector Performance, Policy Outlook In Focus Six of the 11 S&P 500 sectors declined, with the materials index leading losses, down 1.4 per cent. Meanwhile, Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack said there is no immediate need to change interest rates, though both cuts and hikes remain possible. Stock Movers: Broadcom, Snap, Allbirds Rally Broadcom gained 3.1 per cent after Meta extended its custom chips agreement with the company. Snap rose nearly 8 per cent after announcing plans to lay off about 1,000 employees, while Allbirds surged more than eightfold following its plan to pivot to AI infrastructure. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by 1.2-to-1 on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 recorded 10 new 52-week highs and one new low, while the Nasdaq logged 75 new highs and 32 new lows.

Ramaphosa's spokesman Vicent Magwenya announced the appointment in a message to the Associated Press and other news outlets. "I can confirm that President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mr. Roelf Meyer as South Africa's Ambassador to the US," he said, effective immediately. Who is Roelf Meyer? Roelf Meyer was a member of parliament from 1979 to 1997 and was minister of defense from 1991 to 1992 under the white minority government of former President F.W. De Klerk's National Party. He was later a chief negotiator in the talks that brought an end to apartheid and led to the election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa's first Black leader in 1994. Meyer served in Mandela's first unity government Cabinet as constitutional development minister from 1994 to 1996. He later founded the United Democratic Movement, a center-left party that still exists in South Africa but which holds a negligible three of 400 seats in the National Assembly. Meyer is no longer a member. Why are ties between the US and South Africa tense? US President Donald Trump has criticized South Africa's ANC-led government and cut all financial assistance to the country. Accusing the government of allowing a "white genocide" against the minority Afrikaner group, he famously took Ramaphosa to task on the issue in front of reporters at the White House during a 2025 visit to the US. The US has also granted Afrikaners who feel persecuted in South Africa a bespoke migration and asylum procedure. Meyer's predecessor Ebrahim Rasool was expelled in May last year after criticizing the Trump administration and its handling of South Africa, saying it was trying to "project white victimhood as a dog whistle." The comments prompted some criticism in South Africa for breaching diplomatic norms, though they came as little surprise hailing from a diplomat who had grown up classified as "colored" under apartheid rule. The appointment of Meyer follows soon after Ramaphosa accepted conservative activist Leo Brent Bozell III as the new US ambassador to South Africa. The two nations also are at odds over South Africa's decision to pursue an International Court of Justice case accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Trump boycotted the G20 Leaders Summit hosted by South Africa in 2025 and has not invited South Africa to the G20 meetings being hosted by the US in Miami in December. Beyond this, South Africa's wealthiest and best-known white emigre, Elon Musk, has long been a staunch critic of the government in his country of origin. This criticism has amplified considerably in recent days, as Musk is upset at barriers to access for his Starlink company which he claims are racially motivated. Tech Mahindra, however, has refuted these claims, adding that they are “committed to building an inclusive, respectful workplace”. Religious Bias Allegations At Tech Mahindra  The issue came to light after Ashutosh Dubey, an advocate at the Bombay High Court, shared a message on X from a person claiming to be an employee at a Tech Mahindra BPO in Goregaon. In his post, Dubey said he had received a complaint alleging biased hiring practices, unequal workplace policies, and religious favouritism during festivals. He added that if the allegations were true, they would raise serious questions about corporate neutrality and workplace fairness, urging authorities and company leadership to examine the matter. According to the screenshot shared by Dubey, the message claimed that Muslim employees were given “total freedom” during Ramadan, including the organisation of daily iftar gatherings in the canteen. The person claimed that they feel that they are “working in mini Pakistan”.  “I work in tech Mahindra in Goregaon IT park....in the process Rogers telecom.........here at the moment more than 60% employees are Muslim boys......I have joined this company 4 months back. I have seen here that all the Muslim boys are having Hindu girlfriends. I feel very uncomfortable working here. For Muslims they don't have any corporate policies here. Muslim girls are allowed to wear burkhas and Nakabs here. We don't even know who are those girls. There is a Muslim Hr by the name Gulam ghous.....he is the reason for hiring all Muslim boys......during there festivals like Ramzan he gives total freedom to Muslim employees....they have iftar parties daily during that month with all the Muslim employees gathering in the canteen. According to the message, the office pantry had allegedly been declared a “footwear-free zone” during Ramadan to allow employees to offer prayers and break their fast. The post also included photos of a notice reportedly placed in the pantry area. The notice read, “We kindly request everyone to refrain from entering the pantry with footwear until the end of Ramadan. Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi argued that various online entities had created false narratives by superimposing Goenka’s face onto other individuals, often depicting him in violent or inappropriate scenarios that never took place. The Limit of Satire The court heard that the offensive content went far beyond the boundaries of permissible humour or parody. Counsel argued that while public figures are often the subject of satire, these specific posts distorted reality. The fabricated depictions were said to have a damaging impact on the reputation of both Goenka and the various institutions he leads. The legal submission emphasised that such content creates a misleading impression of the industrialist's conduct. By circulating these morphed videos under the guise of IPL commentary, creators were accused of crossing a line from fair comment into derogatory territory. The court observed that public figures must naturally expect a degree of commentary and lampooning. It noted that individuals cannot simply demand that their name or image never be used by the public or the media. However, the justices made a clear distinction between fair criticism and the creation of false identities. The court ruled that when content involves sophisticated face morphing and generates entirely fabricated events, it enters an objectionable zone.
