New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) India's manufacturing PMI stood at 54.2 in June, signalling continued expansion in the sector, according to the HSBC Flash India PMI data released on Wednesday. The seasonally adjusted PMI remained comfortably above the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction, indicating a sustained improvement in operating conditions across the manufacturing sector. According to the data, the HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) came at 54.2, although the pace of growth moderated from the previous month. While several manufacturers reported an improvement in demand, others cited subdued client appetite and market competition. Meanwhile, export demand also remained positive during the month, although the pace of growth moderated. Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, said the June PMI signalled continued expansion in manufacturing activity. "The moderation suggests demand has cooled slightly after the earlier surge linked to the Middle East conflict. Growth slowed across output, new orders, export orders and employment, while both the input and output price indices declined, pointing to softer inflationary pressures as geopolitical disruptions begin receding," she said. The PMI data further showed that input cost and output price inflation eased during the month. Purchasing activity also moderated, resulting in a slower build-up of input inventories, while finished goods inventories declined as firms aligned production with current demand. According to media reports, the 5-kg FTL cylinder in Delhi continues to retail at Rs 821.50 after its price was increased by Rs 11 last month. Commercial LPG Prices Cut From July 1 OMCs have reduced the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by up to Rs 183.50 with effect from July 1. The reduction has brought relief to restaurants, hotels, dhabas and other commercial establishments that depend heavily on LPG for daily operations. However, there has been no change in the price of the standard 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder, offering neither additional relief nor any fresh burden for household consumers. No Change for 5-kg 'Chhotu' LPG Cylinder Unlike commercial LPG, the 5-kg Free Trade LPG cylinder has not been revised in the latest monthly review. The cylinder continues to be sold at the rates notified on June 1, when OMCs raised its price by Rs 11. In Delhi, the 5-kg cylinder continues to cost Rs 821.50. The absence of a price revision means users of smaller LPG cylinders continue to pay the higher rates introduced a month ago. According to media reports, LPG prices are reviewed by oil marketing companies on the first day of every month. The June increase in the price of the 5-kg FTL cylinder came amid elevated international crude oil and gas prices, driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia and concerns over global energy supplies. Although commercial LPG prices have now been reduced, the 5-kg cylinder has not yet seen a corresponding revision. Small Businesses Continue to Bear Higher Costs The continued higher price of the 5-kg FTL cylinder is expected to impact small enterprises that depend on it for everyday operations. Tea stalls, snack vendors, street food outlets and other micro businesses remain among the biggest users of these cylinders. Issuing a clarification on Tuesday night, the Law Ministry said neither the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme nor the E20 policy was ever referred to as an experiment during the court proceedings. It stressed that reports carrying such claims did not reflect the submissions made on behalf of the Union government, reported The Financial Express. "At no stage was any submission made that the Government's Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme or the E20 blending programme is an 'experiment'. It is clarified in explicit terms that any suggestion that the Government described the E20 programme before the Supreme Court as an 'experiment' is incorrect and does not represent the submissions made on behalf of the Union of India," the ministry said. Clarification Follows Reports on Supreme Court Hearing The government statement came after several media reports claimed Attorney General R. Venkataramani had told the Supreme Court that the E20 programme remained an ongoing experiment and that its full impact would become clearer over the next year. The Law Ministry dismissed those reports as "completely false", urging media organisations to exercise greater accuracy while reporting judicial proceedings, particularly those involving major national policy initiatives. The clarification followed a Supreme Court hearing in a dispute over ethanol allocation, where the Centre argued that altering allocations midway through the supply year could affect the existing national framework. The company had participated in a September 2025 tender issued by oil marketing companies (OMCs) for procurement of 1,050 crore litres of ethanol during the 2025-26 Ethanol Supply Year. Although it bid to supply 9.3 crore litres, it was allotted only 3.9 crore litres, leaving what it described as a shortfall of 6.3 crore litres. VINP argued before the Karnataka High Court that the allocation was arbitrary because it had invested in a dedicated ethanol manufacturing facility under long-term arrangements with OMCs. As the plant is contractually committed to supplying ethanol exclusively to oil companies, it argued that it could neither sell to other buyers nor easily switch production to alternative products. The oil marketing companies, however, maintained that the issue arose from contractual obligations and therefore was not suitable for adjudication through a writ petition. Supreme Court Puts High Court Order on Hold The dispute has now reached the Supreme Court after Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd challenged the Karnataka High Court's direction asking OMCs to reconsider the company's request for enhanced ethanol allocation. A Bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu has issued notice in the matter while directing that status quo be maintained. The Karnataka High Court had earlier observed that dedicated ethanol manufacturers established under government policy and operating under long-term offtake agreements should not be denied the preferential allocation contemplated under those arrangements. Venkataramani argued that revising the allocation for one supplier could have consequences extending beyond a single dispute. According to the submissions, ethanol contracts for the 2025-26 supply year had already been finalised in October 2025 and allocations communicated to 378 suppliers. The Attorney General informed the court that nearly 680 crore litres had already been supplied by June 18 against the overall procurement target of 1,050 crore litres. He argued that granting additional allocation to one producer could trigger similar claims from other suppliers and potentially disrupt the national ethanol allocation framework by opening the door to multiple legal challenges. Policy Remains Unchanged, Centre Says With the clarification, the government has sought to separate the contractual dispute currently before the Supreme Court from the broader ethanol blending programme. The Centre has maintained that its E20 policy continues unchanged and rejected suggestions that it has described the initiative as experimental before the apex court. Hundreds of thousands of Indians live and work in the country on H-1B, L-1 intra-company transfer and F-1 student visas. More than one million Indians remain in the employment-based green card backlog, making immigration and citizenship policies a matter of deep concern for thousands of families. The Supreme Court's decision ensures that children born in the United States to Indian parents on H-1B and other temporary visas will continue to receive automatic US citizenship. It also applies to children born to undocumented Indian immigrants in the country. "The ruling is a profound affirmation of who belongs in America. Indians and South Asian immigrant families are among those most directly threatened by Trump's executive order," Patel told news agency IANS. Referring to the decades-long green card backlog faced by many Indians on H-1B visas, Patel said their children are often born in the United States long before their parents receive permanent residency.
