Breathwork For Body And Mind: Healing Anxiety Through Pranayam

(By: Dr. Archika Didi) The growing implications of stress and anxiety on our health are concerning. We must constantly meet the ever-growing demands on both the professional and personal fronts, and all this leaves us overwhelmed. While therapy and medication are valuable tools, there's a powerful, ancient practice gaining modern recognition for its profound impact on anxiety and stress: breathwork or Pranayam. It is said that an individual who can take control of their breathing can also control their health. Controlled breathing taps into your body's innate ability to heal and regulate itself. It leverages the power of pranayam, the vital life force energy in yogic philosophy, to calm your nervous system, clear your mind, and bring a sense of peace. ALSO READ: The Hidden Threat: How Dental Plaque Undermines Gums Health And Causes Tooth Loss The Science Behind The Effectiveness Of Breathing On Stress And Anxiety One of the common questions that arises here is how rhythmic breathing practice can have such a significant impact on health. The answer lies in your autonomic nervous system, which controls functions such as heart rate, digestion, and breathing. Here's the fascinating part: By changing your breathing pattern, you can directly influence which branch of your nervous system is dominant. Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing signals to your brain that you are safe, switching off the "fight or flight" response and activating "rest and digest." All this, influence stress and anxiety level in the body. How Breathwork Helps With Anxiety Reduces Stress Hormones: When you're anxious, your body produces more cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Conscious breathing techniques help lower cortisol levels, bringing your body back into balance. Increases Oxygen Flow: Deep breathing increases the oxygen supply to the brain. This improves cognitive function, reduces brain fog, and enhances your ability to think clearly. Calms the Nervous System: Mindful breathing calms the nervous system, inducing a sense of relaxation and peace.  Releases Stored Tension: We often hold tension in our bodies without realizing it. Breathwork can help release this physical tension, which is usually a manifestation of emotional stress and anxiety. Promotes Mindfulness: By focusing on your breath, you bring your attention to the present moment. This mindfulness practice helps to pull your mind away from anxious thoughts about the past or future. Simple Breathwork Techniques To Try You don't need to be a yogi to start reaping the benefits of breathwork. Here are a few simple techniques you can incorporate into your daily routine: Abdominal Breathing This is the foundation of all breathwork and is remarkably effective. To begin with, lie down or sit comfortably. Keep one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Now, slowly inhale through your nose, allowing your belly to rise (your chest should remain relatively still). Finally, exhale slowly through your mouth, gently pulling your navel towards your spine. Repeat for 5-10 minutes. 4-7-8 Breathing For Better Sleep For this, exhale through your mouth, making a "whoosh" sound. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a "whoosh" sound, for a count of eight. Repeat for a total of four breaths. Box Breathing  Popular among athletes and first responders for its ability to enhance focus and reduce stress under pressure. Exhale all the air from your lungs. Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of four. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of four. Hold your breath (lungs empty) for a count of four. Repeat this practice for several rounds. Embracing Your Breath Breathwork is a powerful tool that empowers you to take control of your emotional and mental well-being. With this simple act of rhythmic breathing practice, you can control your attention and also calm your brain, which eventually induces a sense of relaxation.   Dr. Archika Didi is PhD in Meditation and Vice Chairperson of Vishwa Jagriti Mission [Disclaimer: The information provided in the article, including treatment suggestions shared by doctors, is intended for general informational purposes only. The Hidden Threat: How Dental Plaque Undermines Gums Health And Causes Tooth Loss

(By Dr. Nikhil Srivastava) A significant part of dental hygiene often focuses on aesthetic concerns, yet the importance of gums is often overlooked. Gums serve as the covering for the jawbone and roots of the teeth, help anchoring them securely and contributing to overall oral health. Bleeding gums, bad breath, swollen or red gums, spitting blood while brushing, are the signs of poor gum health, which should not be ignored. Unhealthy gums can also result in persistent bad breath (halitosis) which often leads to embarrassment and unpleasant experiences.  ALSO READ: Postpartum Depression And Maternal Mental Health: Why It’s Still Ignored Decoding Plaque Build-Up: Maintaining healthy gums requires consistent care against common causes, to support overall oral health. Plaque build-up, if left unmanaged, can even result in loss of teeth in the long run and gum problems. Plaque is a sticky film colonised by bacteria that constantly forms on tooth surfaces, particularly along the gum line and on and between teeth. When you consume food, particularly sugary or starchy foods, the bacteria present in the plaque produce chemicals (exotoxins) that weaken the gums. More critically, if plaque isn't removed daily through proper brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus) and begins to irritate and inflame the gums further.  The Downward Spiral: From Gingivitis To Tooth Loss If left untreated, the accumulated plaque can result in serious gum issues including periodontal problems. The initial stage, gingivitis, is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. At this point, the damage is often reversible with good oral hygiene and professional cleaning. A specialist gum care paste and brush which removes plaque effectively can also help at this stage.  Additionally, a mouthwash that targets plaque control is helpful for overall defence.  In progressive and severe stages, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming a gap called as pockets that easily become infected. The body's immune response, combined with action of bacterial toxins, starts to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If unchecked, this eventually may lead to tooth loss. Loss of tooth can result in severe nutrition deficiencies, health implications due to compromised chewing, leading to poor quality of life and health span.  By proactive management of oral health issues, India can save significant healthcare impact and associated costs. The economic burden associated with oral health issues, particularly tooth decay and gum disease, is substantial. The economic burden of oral diseases is estimated to be ₹613.2 billion ($7.3 billion) for India annually.  According to The Economist Impact’s Health Inclusivity Index (HII) improving oral health for all could yield significant economic savings. Chronic gum disease increases inflammation, also raising the risk of type 2 diabetes. By managing gum disease effectively in India, ₹300 billion ($3.5 billion) could be saved in diabetes-related healthcare costs over the next decade.  Beyond Brushing: The Role Of Specialised Formulations While regular toothpastes have benefits, specialised gum care toothpastes (that contain Sodium Bicarbonate, Zine Citrate) are often recommended to tackle gum problems effectively. These are designed to remove plaque more effectively, through addition of specialized ingredients. Take control Of Your Gum Health To Ensure Optimal Oral Health Tackling gum problems starts with understanding the role of plaque. Here's how you can protect your gums.  Recognise symptoms of gum issues: Spotting early signs of deteriorating gum health is the first step in preventive care.  Specialised gum care routine: Using toothbrushes with soft bristles that are gentle on the tooth, and toothpastes containing specialized ingredients like sodium bicarbonate are targeted to treating gum issues.  Floss Daily: Flossing removes plaque build-up and food particles from between teeth and under the gumline, where it is harder for a toothbrush to reach Use Mouthwash regularly: A specialised mouthwash help reduce plaque, fight signs of gum problems, and provide additional protection Regular Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist for check-ups twice a year. They can help detect early signs of gum problems and monitor your oral health.  Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced fibrous diet rich in vitamins and minerals and avoiding smoking and frequent snacking can also contribute to healthy gums.  Dr Nikhil Srivastava, Principal, Prof and Head, Subharti Dental College and Hospital, Subharti University Meerut [Disclaimer: The information provided in the article, including treatment suggestions shared by doctors, is intended for general informational purposes only. CSK React To Player Release Speculations Amid IPL 2026 Auction Buzz?

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had an extremely disappointing run from their standards in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The five-time champions finished last, at the tenth spot, managing just 4 wins out of 14 games. Needless to say, some changes are expected to be made in their squad ahead of IPL 2026.  A recent report from Cricbuzz claimed that Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, Sam Curran, and Devon Conway could be released from the CSK squad leading up to the auctions. Interestingly, the witty change in the franchise's official X profile bio suggests it may have responded to this particular speculation. 'Nothing's Official Till You See It Here': CSK's New Bio The brand new bio of the Chennai Super Kings' official X profile (@ChennaiIPL) states: "Nothing's official till you see it here 💛😉" This change was apparently made after the said report surfaced, which is why it is being speculated as a witty response to it.  The IPL 2026 auctions are expected to take place later this year, possibly in mid-December, however, the exact dates are yet to be revealed officially. Nevertheless, the players mentioned in the above mentioned report were among the weakest performers for CSK in IPL 2025. So, it wouldn't be surprising if some of them actually end up being released. IPL 2026 Auction Date: What Do We Know As stated, official IPL 2026 auction dates haven't been revealed just yet. That said, Cricbuzz has suggested that it should take place between December 13 and 15, 2025.  If the auction is to take place on these dates, which would be just two months away, all IPL franchises should drop the list of retained and released players in the near future.  Fans are also hoping to see new and exciting players debut in the auction ahead of the next season of India's grand T20 league. World Mental Health Day 2025: The Impact Of Social Media And New Trends On Wellbeing

{By: Dr Kedar Tilwe} In today’s connected world, social media has become a part of almost everything we do — the way we talk, share, and stay informed. What started as a way to bring people closer has now turned into a vast digital world that can help our mental health in some ways, but also harm it in others. In simple terms, social media works like a double-edged sword — it can create awareness, build confidence, and make people feel supported, but it can also increase stress, comparison, and anxiety if not used mindfully. ALSO READ: Mental Health Day 2025: Understanding Postpartum Blues vs. Depression And How To Support New Mothers The Positive Ripple Effect At its best, social media helps people stay connected across cities, countries, and even continents. It allows open and meaningful conversations that were once difficult to have, especially about topics like mental health. Over time, it has helped break the stigma — the feeling of shame or fear — around discussing mental well-being. Today, people freely talk about therapy (professional counselling to manage thoughts and emotions), mindfulness (staying calm and aware in the present moment), and self-care (taking time to look after one’s own health and happiness). Campaigns, influencers, and even regular users are spreading positive messages that make others feel understood and supported. As a result, online spaces have become more caring and inclusive, where people can learn, heal, and connect — sometimes finding comfort from strangers who truly relate to what they’re going through. The Hidden Downside However, the same social media platforms that help us connect can also make us feel lonely and disconnected. Constantly seeing pictures and posts that show only the “perfect” side of people’s lives creates what’s called Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) — the feeling that others are happier, more successful, or living better lives than we are. This pressure, especially on young people, makes many try to match unrealistic standards of beauty, success, or lifestyle. Comparing oneself to others all the time can lead to anxiety (constant worry or nervousness), depression (feeling sad and hopeless for long periods), and a sense of not being good enough. Spending too much time online without breaks can also lead to loneliness, panic attacks (sudden intense fear and discomfort), and unhealthy habits like using alcohol or drugs as a way to cope. Striking A Balance The solution is not to completely quit social media, but to use it more mindfully. This means setting digital boundaries — like limiting screen time or taking short breaks — and following pages or people who share positive and helpful content. It’s equally important to spend time with friends and family in real life, as face-to-face connections help build emotional balance. When used wisely, social media can actually support mental health by spreading awareness and creating supportive communities. But we need to stay in control — instead of letting the platform’s algorithm (the system that decides what posts you see) decide how we feel or think. In the end, social media mirrors both the good and bad sides of human nature — it can bring people together or push them apart, heal minds or hurt them. The real difference lies in how we choose to use it every day. The author, Dr Kedar Tilwe, is the Consultant Psychiatrist, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi. Studies have linked excessive social media use with increased anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Experts like Dr. Daund suggest cultivating offline hobbies, meaningful connections, and personal achievements as more enduring sources of joy. 3. A sound mind in a sound body “A sound mind in a sound body… Let us build both together.” *** Dr Suhas VP, Neurologist (NIMHANS), Bengaluru Physical activity isn’t just good for the body, it directly benefits the brain. Exercise releases endorphins and supports neuroplasticity, helping the mind stay resilient against stress and cognitive decline. 4. Early help strengthens resilience "Early access to mental health services strengthens resilience and fosters emotional wellbeing, helping families navigate challenges more effectively." *** Tarun Gupta, Director and Co-founder of Lissun. Prompt intervention is key. According to WHO data, early treatment of mental health issues improves recovery outcomes and reduces the long-term impact on families. 5. Mental health is a primary responsibility “Without our brain and mind we can't do anything right, so without mental health we can't do anything right... Make your mental health your primary responsibility.” *** Dr Anita Daund, Little Minds Psychiatric Development Centre, Nashik. Self-care is not selfish. Experts consistently stress that investing in mental wellbeing, through therapy, meditation, or routine check-ups, pays dividends in personal and professional life. 6. Awareness can turn suffering into hope “There is no health without mental health. Awareness, empathy, and timely support can turn silent suffering into stories of hope.” *** Dr Anjani Kumar Sharma, Director, Neurosciences, CK Birla Hospitals, Jaipur Studies show that stigma reduction and public awareness campaigns increase help-seeking behaviour and can transform community mental health outcomes. Dr. Sharma underscores the power of timely support in turning challenges into resilience. Takeaway: Mental health is foundational. From daily habits to seeking early care, and from community support to self-awareness, there are simple steps we can all take to protect and nurture our minds. Mental Health Day 2025: Understanding Postpartum Blues vs. Depression And How To Support New Mothers

The arrival of a newborn brings immense joy, but it can also trigger unexpected emotional changes for many mothers. New mothers often experience temporary mood swings, tearfulness, or irritability, but it’s crucial to differentiate between what is typical and what requires medical attention. ALSO READ: World Mental Health Day 2025: Yoga And Gentle Exercise For Mental Clarity Understanding Postpartum Emotions Dr Pankhuri Gautam, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynecology at Cocoon Hospital, notes, "We often refer to postpartum blues as 'baby blues,' a common experience that affects around 70–80% of new mothers a few days after childbirth. It usually lasts a week or two and doesn’t require medical treatment." On the other hand, postpartum depression (PPD) can be more severe and persistent. Dr Aruna Kalra, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at C K Birla Hospital, adds, "PPD may start a few weeks after delivery, sometimes even after a few months. Mothers may feel very sad, hopeless, or guilty, lose interest in things they once enjoyed, struggle to bond with the baby, or have trouble sleeping or eating." Recognising Early Warning Signs  Family members and partners often play a key role in noticing signs of emotional distress. Dr Tejashri Shrotri, Senior Consultant at Medfemme Women’s Clinic, advises, "If the mother seems unusually withdrawn, overwhelmed, tearful, or is struggling to connect with the baby even after the initial weeks, these could be early signs of emotional distress." Common signs include persistent sadness, withdrawal from loved ones, disrupted sleep, or sudden changes in appetite. Dr Pankhuri Gautam highlights, "If any of these signs continue for more than a week or two, it’s important to offer support without judgment." Observing carefully, listening, and encouraging open conversation can help mothers feel understood and supported. Effective Support Systems For New Mothers Practical and emotional support is vital during postpartum recovery. Dr Aruna Kalra says, "Every new mom needs a strong circle of support, including emotional reassurance, practical help with baby care, and professional guidance." Even small gestures like helping with household chores, providing nutritious meals, or giving the mother time to rest can make a huge difference. Dr Tejashri Shrotri adds, "Support during the postpartum period is not just helpful, it’s essential. No mother should feel like she has to ‘handle it all’ alone." Preventive Steps During Pregnancy Preparation during pregnancy can reduce the risk of postpartum depression. Dr Pankhuri Gautam suggests, "Expectant mothers are usually encouraged to engage in regular exercise, balanced nutrition, mindfulness, and prenatal yoga, while maintaining open communication with family and healthcare providers." Dr Aruna Kalra also recommends attending prenatal classes and planning for extra help in the early weeks. "Maintaining good sleep, healthy food, and light exercise, along with emotional support, can make a real difference," she says. Dr Tejashri Shrotri concludes, "Early awareness and open communication are powerful tools for managing postpartum emotions." By recognising the differences between baby blues and postpartum depression and creating a supportive environment, families can help new mothers navigate this critical period. Understanding, empathy, and practical support can ensure both mother and baby thrive. Ancient fungi ruled Earth’s landscapes billions of years before plants, secretly shaping the first ecosystems

New research reveals fungi, not plants, were Earth's first land colonizers, emerging hundreds of millions of years earlier. These ancient fungi partnered with algae, recycled nutrients, and built proto-soils, stabilizing surfaces and releasing essential elements. This groundbreaking discovery shows fungi created the foundational ecosystems that paved the way for plants and all terrestrial life.
