No More ‘LPG Charges’ On Your Food Bill: CCPA Issues Warning To Restaurants

To protect diners from hidden costs, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has warned hotels and restaurants against levying additional charges such as “LPG charges”, “gas surcharge” or “fuel cost recovery” on customer bills. The authority has made it clear that such charges are not legally permissible when imposed by default and could invite strict action, reported The Times of India. What Triggered the Crackdown? The advisory comes after the CCPA observed a growing number of complaints from consumers. Inputs from the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), along with media reports, indicated that several eateries were adding such charges over and above the listed menu prices and applicable taxes. Authorities noted that these charges were often applied automatically, leaving consumers with little choice but to pay. Why ‘LPG Charges’ Are Not Allowed The CCPA, invoking provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, stated that costs such as fuel, LPG, electricity and other operational expenses are part of running a business and must already be factored into menu pricing. In simple terms, what you see on the menu is what you should pay, apart from applicable taxes. The watchdog emphasised that customers should not be misled or compelled into paying additional charges that are neither transparent nor voluntary. Imposing such fees by default has been categorised as an “unfair trade practice”. A Backdoor Service Charge? The authority also flagged concerns that such charges may be used to bypass existing guidelines on service charges. By labelling costs as “fuel” or “gas recovery”, some establishments may be attempting to recover expenses in a manner that avoids scrutiny, effectively passing on operational costs directly to customers. What Happens If Restaurants Don’t Comply? The CCPA has issued a clear warning: any violation of these guidelines could lead to strict action. This means restaurants continuing to add such charges risk regulatory scrutiny and penalties under consumer protection laws. What Can Consumers Do? Consumers who notice such charges on their bills are not without recourse. The CCPA has advised that diners can request that the establishment remove the charge. If the issue is not resolved, complaints can be lodged via the National Consumer Helpline by calling 1915 or through its mobile application. Additionally, consumers can file a formal complaint before the appropriate consumer commission through the e-Jagriti portal. The latest advisory reinforces a broader push towards pricing transparency in the hospitality sector. For consumers, it serves as a reminder to check bills carefully and question any unfamiliar charges. For restaurants, it signals that operational costs must remain embedded within menu prices, rather than being passed on through add-ons that could be deemed misleading.

Oil Back Above $100: West Asia Tensions Trigger Fresh Price Surge

Global oil markets are back on edge, with crude prices climbing past the psychologically significant $100 per barrel mark. The latest trigger: escalating tensions in West Asia and fresh uncertainty over diplomatic efforts involving Iran and the United States. According to a report by IANS, Brent crude futures rose 1.21 per cent to $103.46 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 1.35 per cent to $91.54 per barrel on Thursday. What Sparked the Latest Surge? The immediate catalyst for the price jump was a statement from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who clarified that Tehran is not engaged in direct negotiations with the US to end the ongoing conflict. He noted that exchanges taking place through intermediaries should not be interpreted as formal negotiations. Reports also suggest that Iran is likely to reject a US-backed ceasefire proposal, adding to uncertainty in global energy markets. The absence of clear diplomatic progress has heightened fears of prolonged disruptions in a region critical to global oil supply. A Volatile Week for Oil Markets The latest rally comes just a day after crude prices had declined sharply on Wednesday, driven by optimism around a possible ceasefire in West Asia. This sharp reversal highlights the fragile sentiment in global oil markets, where prices are reacting swiftly to every geopolitical signal. Why India Is Watching Closely For India, fluctuations in crude oil prices carry significant macroeconomic implications. Experts note that every $10 per barrel change in crude prices can impact the current account deficit (CAD) by 0.3-0.5 percentage points of GDP. At the same time, such movements can push up consumer price inflation by 20-30 basis points, depending on how costs are passed on to consumers. The recent volatility, therefore, has direct consequences for inflation, fiscal planning and external sector stability. Strait of Hormuz: A Critical Lifeline Amid the rising tensions, Iran has announced that it will allow vessels from five countries, including India, to pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Ships from Russia, China, Pakistan and Iraq have also been granted safe passage through the key maritime chokepoint, even as restrictions remain in place for others. However, vessels linked to countries seen as adversaries, including the United States, Israel and certain Gulf nations involved in the conflict, are unlikely to receive clearance to transit through the strait. Given that a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes through this narrow route, any disruption or selective access can have far-reaching implications for global energy markets. The Bigger Picture: Relief or Risk? Earlier price corrections had raised hopes of some relief for India’s inflation and current account position. However, the latest spike underscores how quickly that outlook can change. With geopolitical tensions showing little sign of easing and oil prices reacting sharply to developments, markets are likely to remain volatile in the near term.

ABP Live Doc Talk: Feeling Nauseous While Travelling? The Hidden Science Behind Motion Sickness

Motion Sickness is triggered by moving vehicles particularly on hilly roads, as well as certain ferry and boat rides. Even, people who usually travel regularly and have good tolerance towards rough motion also have a similar experience once in a while.  Motion Sickness is usually looked  as  a stomach issue, but the real culprit is hiding in the plain sight, i.e. the brain. Imagine sitting in the back seat of a car and reading a book. Your eyes are focused on the stationary pages, so they tell the brain that the body is not moving. However, the inner ear senses acceleration, turns, and bumps in the road, signalling that the body is moving. The brain receives these conflicting messages and struggles to reconcile them. The brain works in a highly coordinated manner with the inner ear and eyes to detect motion in the surrounding. ALSO READ: ABP Live Doc Talk | When Viruses Attack The Brain: Understanding Nipah Virus And Its Life-Threatening Impact This sensory mismatch confuses the brain causing nausea, vomiting, sweating, and dizziness. The Brain’s Three Point Navigation Brain act as a central hub to maintain balance and orientation by interacting with three major sensory systems: The Balance System: Located in the inner ear, is the network of fluid filled canal which serves as body’s motion detector. In coordination with brain, it allows the body tilts, rotations and speed. The Visual System: Our eyes constantly inform our brain about our whereabouts with respect to our surroundings. Body position and Sensing System: Sensors located in the muscle and joint send signals to the brain about the position and movement of the body. By merging signals from multiple sensory systems, the brain creates a stable perception of reality.  Why Does Motion Sickness Cause Nausea Our brain has ancient survival response. When conflicting signals received from the eyes and the balance system, the brain misinterprets them as a sign of toxin exposure. As a protective response brain activates the receptors causing nausea and vomiting     Tips To Ease Motion Sickness  Look at the Horizon: Focusing on the Horizon gives the eyes a stable reference point, reducing the sensory mismatch that leads to motion sickness. Take the Helm: Driving allows the brain to predict motion in advance, reducing confusion between expected and felt movement. Front Seating: Brain anticipates motion through visual cues, therefore lowering the chances of motion sickness. Controlled breathing: Slow and deep breathing help relax nervous system and reduce motion related nausea. Virtual Reality (VR) Games: Specialized clinics offers Virtual Reality games and exercises which help retrain brain to coordinate with eyes, inner ear and body. Chery iCar V23 To Rival Thar Electric On 2027

JSW Motors is preparing a large onslaught of new machines for the Indian market and the Jetour T2 is the start as it has a whole army of new cars waiting for us.  Comparison In terms of the volume, the Chery iCar would be interesting since it would be a four metre plus electric SUV which would rival the electric Thar. That said, the V23 is expected to come before the electric Thar in India.  The proportions are mini G Wagon with a cute but butch design and it has square boxy looks. There is a space to store the charging cables as well while it is tall, small and kind of like a Jimny rival.  The round headlamps are cool and the V23 will have large wheels too.  For India, the V23 will have an obvious JSW badge rather than Chery badging with some changes as well. This would be a pure electric SUV and will be coming with single as well as dual motor configurations.  The range is expected to top out at 500km while the interiors would be funky but reasonably spacious too.  The V23 will be slotted within the competitive Rs 15-25 lakh space and would be a boxy off-roader aimed at electric lifestyle enthusiast car buyers.  This car would also be the major volume spinner for JSW and this car will further help the carmaker expand its operations in India.  Spotted testing in India, the iCar V23 will be an interesting new car to look out for but it is still some time away with a launch by 2027 and at least with the T2 settling down first.

Chitra Navratri 2026: Preapare This Unique Makhana Kheer Brûlée With These Easy Steps

(Chef Arjyo Banerjee) The Makhana Caramel Kheer Brûlée is a refined take on a beloved Indian dessert, merging the comforting familiarity of kheer with the elegance of a classic French brûlée. At its heart lies makhana, or fox nuts, a traditional fasting ingredient that has long been valued for its lightness and nutritional richness. High in protein, low in calories, and packed with antioxidants, makhana transforms this dessert into one that feels indulgent yet balanced. Slow-cooked in full-fat milk and enriched with khoya, the kheer develops a luscious, creamy texture, while saffron and cardamom lend it a delicate aromatic depth. The addition of nuts further enhances its nutritional profile, offering healthy fats and a satisfying crunch. What sets this preparation apart is the caramelized sugar crust, lending the dish a brûlée finish.  Symbolically, this dish represents the harmony between tradition and modernity. While kheer has been a staple of Indian festive and fasting rituals for centuries, the brûlée technique adds a contemporary twist, making it relevant for today’s evolving culinary landscape. It reflects a shift towards reinterpreting heritage recipes in ways that feel both familiar and exciting. Perfect for festive occasions, this dessert captures the essence of celebration - rich, comforting, and slightly indulgent, yet rooted in mindful ingredients. It serves as a reminder that even within the constraints of fasting, there is room for creativity, sophistication, and a touch of luxury. ABP Live Doc Talk | When Viruses Attack The Brain: Understanding Nipah Virus And Its Life-Threatening Impact

Nipah virus infection is a rare yet highly dangerous disease that first came to light during an outbreak in Malaysia in 1998. Since then, sporadic outbreaks have been reported in India, particularly in Kerala, raising public health concerns due to its high fatality rate and potential for rapid spread. ALSO READ: ABP Live Doc Talk | The Growing Threat Of Sickle Cell And Thalassemia: What You Need To Know How The Virus Spreads The Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection, meaning it spreads from animals to humans. Fruit bats, also known as flying foxes, are the natural carriers of the virus. Transmission can occur through direct contact with infected animals like bats and pigs or by consuming contaminated food such as fruits or raw date palm juice. Human-to-human transmission is also possible through close contact with infected body fluids, including respiratory secretions. Symptoms: From Mild Illness To Severe Complications One of the challenges with Nipah virus infection is its unpredictable clinical presentation. In some individuals, the infection may remain asymptomatic or cause mild symptoms such as fever, cold, cough, and general weakness. However, in severe cases, the virus can affect vital organs like the brain and heart. A major complication is encephalitis, which refers to inflammation of the brain. This can lead to symptoms such as persistent headache, seizures, confusion, altered consciousness, psychiatric disturbances, and even coma. The virus may also cause myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, further increasing the risk of fatal outcomes. The mortality rate can be as high as 60 percent, making early recognition critical. Survivors may continue to experience long-term neurological deficits. Diagnosis And Treatment Diagnosis of Nipah virus infection involves laboratory testing of samples such as blood, urine, nasal or throat swabs, and cerebrospinal fluid. Early detection plays a key role in managing the disease and preventing its spread.Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for Nipah virus. Management is largely supportive and focuses on relieving symptoms. In cases involving encephalitis, treatment includes managing seizures, reducing brain swelling, and providing intensive care support when needed. Prevention And Control Given the absence of a definitive treatment or vaccine, prevention remains the most effective strategy. Individuals should avoid consuming potentially contaminated food, especially raw date palm juice and fruits that may have been exposed to bats. Proper hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals are essential. Once a case is identified, strict isolation of the patient is necessary to prevent transmission. Public awareness and timely public health interventions play a crucial role in controlling outbreaks. Nipah virus stands out as a serious infectious disease with strong neuroinvasive potential. While rare, its high mortality and risk of complications make it a significant public health concern. Awareness, early detection, and preventive measures are key to reducing its impact and preventing future outbreaks.
